Install CILe - New installation or upgrade

What do I need to install CILe on my computer the first time? How do I do it?

(Current CILe users, go here for upgrade instructions.)

Currently, CILe only works (as far as I know) on Windows XP and Vista. Vista users please go here for important information regarding running CILe, otherwise it won't work.

  1. Download the latest CILe setup package onto your desktop from here. Select the one called "New Installation."
  2. Unzip it into a folder onto your desktop.
  3. Double-click on the second folder called "CILe Setup" to open the folder.
  4. Double-click on "setup.exe" to run the executable installation program. Click the OK buttons at the end.
  5. Double-click on the "CILe Finish Setup" icon that was created.
  6. Click the "Finish CILe Setup" button.
  7. Double-click on the CILe icon on the desktop to start CILe.
  8. Fill in your personal information.
  9. Go to CILe Help off of the Help pull-down menu at the top to see where to go from there.

Optional:

  1. Edit the letterhead_picture.jpg file located in C:\Program Files\CILeLinkedFiles\ folder with any photo software and create your letterhead that will go on top of your reports.

What do I have when I do that? It's asking me for a registration number?

You have the trial version. It is exactly like the full version in every respect, except you can only add five clients to the database. Other than that, it is complete, including the ability to submit claims electronically. If you only have five clients, you have all you need and you don't need to pay me a thing. If, after you've tried it out, you want to purchase a license for unlimited clients, go here and click the "Buy" button at the bottom of the page and you will be transferred to the PayPal site to pay for the license. The cost is listed on that page. Please e-mail me before you submit your payment to make sure I am immediately available to send you the registration number. Once I receive the notification from Paypal that the payment is complete, I will e-mail you the registration number to unlock it.

I'm already a CILe user and it's installed on my computer. How do I upgrade to the new version?

CILe is actually made up of two parts: The CILe software (the part I wrote) and the Microsoft Access 2007 Runtime. The Runtime is a fairly sizeable program Microsoft wrote so you can run an Access 2007 program on your computer without having to purchase Microsoft Access 2007 itself. When you download CILe the first time, it comes with it. Once you have installed CILe the first time, you don't need to do that again. That's why the Upgrade package is so much smaller than the "New Installation" package. You're not downloading the Microsoft Runtime, too.

However, that's really just boring information, and doesn't change much from your end except the download time.

There's really only two steps you need to take that the "New Installation" people don't: You need to do a backup of your database, and you need to uninstall the current installation of CILe.

  1. Always first make a backup copy of your database off of the Administrative menu.
  2. Download the latest CILe setup package onto your desktop from here. Select the one called "Upgrade."
  3. Unzip it onto your desktop. It will create a folder on your desktop called CILe_setup_xxx, where the xxx is the version number.
  4. Uninstall the CILe program through your Control Panel (Add or Remove Programs for XP, or Programs and Features for Vista). Your data is unaffected by this remove action. The installation program will remind you if you haven't do it.
  5. Double-click on the folder on your desktop called CILe_setup_xxx to open the folder contents.
  6. Double-click on "setup.exe" in that folder to run the installation program. Click the OK buttons at the end.
  7. Double-click on the "CILe Finish Setup" icon that was created.
  8. Click the "Finish CILe Setup" button. This step copies all of your data from your current database and puts it into the new database and sets up the proper filenames in the CILe folder. It doesn't take more than a second or two, so when it says it's done, exit out. I have occasionally had some problems at this stage with Vista users, so e-mail me if it's a problem for you and I can get you up and running.
  9. Double-click on the "CILe" icon (not the "CILe Utilities" icon) on the desktop to start CILe.
  10. Fill in your personal information.
  11. Go to CILe Help off of the Help menu (upper-right of the CILe window) to see where to go from there to start understanding CILe and adding clients.
  12. E-mail me at the link below if you have any questions or issues.
